While some believe that|traditional practices and beliefs should be utilized to generate revenue by promoting them as tourist attractions, others believe such steps can harm the cultural aspect of a community. This essay aims to discuss both views. In my opinion, using traditions to attract tourists has more advantages than disadvantages in the modern world.
On the one hand, some think that long-conserved traditional aspects of a community must be preserved from excessive exposure to the world by not using them for commercial reasons such as tourism. Cultural factors give meaning to a person’s existence in a particular setup and help one connect with members of their community on superficial and deep levels. Commercialising the same may be equated to compromising the soul of a community and the bond the members of that community find themselves bound by. It is because once commercialised, the traditional elements may be tweaked to honour the commercial forces leading to a threat to society losing its identity.
On the other hand, employing traditions to attract tourists is seen as a welcome step by others. It may offer platforms for more cultural exchanges and additional opportunities for learning for all parties involved. It ultimately leads to more oneness amongst different cultures. Moreover, when tourists visit a country, they wish to experience every facet of its culture and traditional practices; thus, traditional segments have been instrumental in attracting foreigners, aiding employment, infrastructure development, and the promotion of local handicrafts and the economy. Rajasthan, an Indian state with rich culture and tradition, has thrived due to an influx of foreign tourists attracted to its traditional riches.
I believe the immoderate mingling of locals with incoming tourists brings in external influences: such impacts may be particularly noticeable when there are influences from significantly dissimilar cultures. However, today, traditional exchanges can neither be avoided nor should be seen as a negative consequence, for this trend can lead to more oneness in the world. Moreover, this shift can be utilized for economic progress by promoting hospitality embedded with cultural aspects.
Summing up, while commercializing traditional beliefs and practices may be opposed by some, its benefits, such as more unity in the world and, progress in the economy outweigh its perceived drawbacks.
