Cambridge IELTS 9: Some people think that the teenage years are the happiest times of most people’s lives. Others think that adult life brings more happiness, despite greater responsibilities. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Teenage years and adulthood are two main phases of life. For some people, teens are more beautiful than the grown-up years, while for others it is not so. This essay will try to understand both sides of the argument and come to a conclusion.

For most people, teens can bring a bit of independence in life, and at the same time, there are not many responsibilities on their shoulders. As children enter their teenage, they enjoy the fact that they can have more freedom than before. It is a period when people experience a surge in energy and are very hopeful for their future. At this age, an average youth plans for the future and works towards that. However, in some families, this may not be the case. If parents are too controlling, or the economic condition does not let a child enjoy life in the ways mentioned above, adolescence may not be the golden period.

When one grows up, there is a high chance that this person has attained a certain level of financial independence. Some people probably feel it to be true. No doubt that the possibility for such a person to live a happy life rises. In addition to the economic situation, job satisfaction and bonding with friends and family members also contribute to contentment. However, if any of the above fails to meet one’s expectations, one may become resentful.

Even though the above is true, some people find more happiness in their teenage and others once they move past younger years. I believe a person’s satisfaction does not depend on age or outer circumstances; ultimately, happiness and contentment are matters of choice and are always possible to attain, irrespective of external circumstances.

In conclusion, much depends on perspective and personal experiences.
