Lately, there has been a heightened movement of travellers, leading to people of different cultures coming face to face more than ever before. Some people believe that guests should abide by the traditions and behaviours of the land they visit, while others feel that the local people should accept the cultural contrasts visitors bring due to such movements. This essay aims at discussing both views before concluding.
Firstly, some people believe that tourists must comply with the local ways of living to avoid any shock for the local inhabitants due to staggering differences in dressing up, eating habits, or behaviour. Giving freedom to visitors to practice whatever they like or believe can frighten the locals, especially when too modern people visit conventional countries. Since the guests are outsiders and willingly visit a place for a short duration, they can alter their ways to follow what is prevalent in the destination.
However, some believe today there is no room for opposing others’ ways, for cultural exchange is inevitable and must be accepted with love and grace. When a person visits a distant place, that person has much to learn and much to teach. Consequently, such travels must be considered an opportunity to learn where both parties can understand a lot about each other by showing friendliness and accepting each other’s beliefs, lifestyles, and cultures. In fact, free movement can help businesses.
I believe there should be an acceptance of a guest’s ways, but boundaries must be acknowledged and respected. For instance, when travellers visit regions with strict dress codes, they must dress and behave as per acceptable local standards, mainly around senior citizens and inside places of worship. For this, the guests must study and understand what is unacceptable, and they must behave respectfully by being a little careful regarding not disturbing or hurting the sentiments of the locals.
To sum up, a rise in national and international travel will be inevitable; thus, a positive attitude of accepting others as they are can help open new doors for all. However, everyone should ensure they are respectful of others’ beliefs and boundaries.
