Nowadays, there is more and more competition for getting into university.

Is this a positive or negative development?

Reported on IELTS December 30th

The competition to obtain admission into universities has been getting harder. Even though it is believed that this development helps the universities attract the most elite students, which further facilitates them to create a scholarly atmosphere with high standards of education, I believe this trend has many severe drawbacks, and it is time to critically evaluate the process and purpose of higher education.

First, excessive competition to get admission into universities puts undeserved pressure on students and their parents. It has been observed that most students face mental issues such as anxiety and depression. In extreme cases, some students give up on their studies or commit suicide. There have been many instances of IIT aspirants taking their own lives only because they thought that might fail their parents’ expectations by not clearing the challenging university entrance examinations or meeting their high admission criteria.

Too much competition sets flawed precedences among students and parents. An inability to perform well in these exams can have a long-term impact on a person’s psyche. They may feel inferior without realising not being able to fulfil university entrance criteria is not the only criterion of success. They are often considered inferior by others.

Moreover, this process promotes an unhealthy competitive spirit and passes on a message that humans must compete instead of cooperating to succeed. Developing such an attitude by the education system does not help youngsters and society. Competitiveness over collaboration is given priority in such a setup.

Finally, I would like to reiterate that though establishing difficult entrance criteria may occur to be an effective approach and may appear to be a quick solution, it has many long-term and profound damaging impacts on individuals and societies.

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
